Impact of Violence

Violence affects not only the actual victims, but also others, including  family, friends, and co-workers. The reaction of people to acts of violence, whether the victims or observers, can depend on their personality, learned coping strategies, and the physical environment.

The impact of violence on the individual can include:

  • Physical harm or death
  • Stress
  • Emotional trauma (anxiety, fear, sleeping problems, post-traumatic stress)
  • Feelings of powerlessness
  • Suicide
  • Demotivation
